Securing Southwell’s green spaces

by Peter Harris on 3 October, 2010

Lets keep our green spaces around SouthwellSouthwell has bought nearly four acres of meadow land in the centre of the town. The field, between Church Street and Burgage Lane, Shady Lane and Becher’s Walk was offered for sale to the town earlier this year. It is one of the few meadows located in the centre of any town of our size in the UK.

Nearly ten years ago the town sold land at Nottingham Road to allow sheltered housing and the Day Centre at Moorfield Court and Three Spires to be built. Liberal Democrat councillors promised to keep the money to buy land in the town for leisure and recreational use. Last year, the town leased the Minster Fields, the old school playing fields, as the County Council has refused to sell the land to the town. The Council has also acquired Riverside Park near Greet Mill.

“We are delighted to have made sure that this important parcel of land can be kept maintained by the town for future generations,” said Peter Harris. “Although some people said that we should have spent this money on everyday things- it was vital that we kept our promise, so that the town could buy this important piece of land.”
