Flood maps recently issued by the Environment Agency shows over 30 houses in Church Street and Newark Road at risk of flooding
The EA says that residents should ‘Be prepared!’ as parts of Southwell, many houses close to The Dumble from Minster School to Marrison Way, are in an area that has a significant chance of flooding. The chance of flooding each year, in these identified areas, is greater than 1.3% (1 in 75).
However, the EA’s maps, that only cover flooding from rivers and the sea, do not show other areas of known risk such as Leeway Road where flooding can occur due to run-off from Halam Hill and other hills around Southwell and the joining of storm water drains to sewer overflows etc..
We will press for proper action to reduce risk. The Town Council has already dug a spillway next to the bridge on Harvey’s Field to ensure that water can drain off rather than pond back and reduce flood risk on close by houses.
We are working with residents to ensure that any road works do not increase flood risk. We are also campaigning to make sure that any development around the town does not make things worse for residents – by increasing runoff and increasing flood risks.
