Pressing for flood measures

by Peter Harris on 29 February, 2012

A number of houses are prone to flooding in Southwell. Some of those houses have been mapped by the Environment Agency, but some are flooded due to local poor drainage.

Many local people are concerned about future flooding, and residents have expressed worry about insurance costs. More must be done on flood insurance in the Trent valley, an agreement between the insurance companies and the Government is due to expire in 2013.  Insurers must use the most up-to-date data on local flood risk and take into account resilience measures and the steps that individual householders have taken to reduce their own risk.

Wash from cars in Church Street was a significant problem for residents

In Southwell, many houses were damaged by wash from cars. Liberal Democrats are pressing the Council to close roads when inconsiderate vehicles cause more damage by driving through the water on the road.

We wait to see if the County Council will respond to allow local council officers to close a road which is flooded, rather than waiting for an officer from County Hall to come along.
